About Us
Reviving Tradition, Building Community: The Story of Amateur Carrom Board Club of East Freehold
Our club was founded out of a need for engaging and fun in-home entertainment during the COVID-19 pandemic. While searching for alternatives to chess and Monopoly, we rediscovered the classic game our parents grew up playing in India—Carrom.
We instantly fell in love with it and got hooked. What started as a small gathering of enthusiasts quickly grew into a vibrant community where we came together to share our hobby with the world and enjoy quality time.
At ACBC, we aim to introduce and promote Carrom to second-generation Indian- American kids and celebrate cultural heritage through this enjoyable sport. We aspire to help people learn the skills and strategies to become pros at Carrom.
We host events twice a year—one in the summer and another in the winter—bringing together players of all ages and skills for friendly competition and camaraderie. Our club is about mastering Carrom while creating lasting friendships and sharing the joy of a game that has captivated players for generations.

What is Carrom?
Carrom is an exciting tabletop game with roots in South Asia. It’s similar to table shuffleboard and billiards. However, it is played differently on a square board with a smooth surface. The game is played by flicking small disks, called Carrom billard or billiards, into one of four corner pockets using a larger striker disk. The objective is to sink all of your disks before your opponent does, with the added challenge of capturing the queen, a special red disk, to secure victory.
Carrom is a brain game that sharpens strategic thinking and enhances concentration. It challenges players to plan moves, anticipate opponents, and execute precise shots, improving cognitive skills and problem-solving abilities.
How To Play Carrom
Getting started with Carrom is easy and fun. However, you must learn the basic rules like setting the board, striking technique, and securing the queen. Here are a few steps to help you master your game:
How to Set Up a Carrom Board
Place your board on a flat surface to ensure a level game. Next, arrange the Carrom billiards in a tight circle with the queen, the red disk, in the middle. Then lightly sprinkle Carrom powder on the board to help the disks slide smoothly. Now, position the striker within the baselines on your side of the board so you can make precise shots.
How to Break in Common
Breaking in Carrom is the first shot that scatters the Carrom billiards from their setup. To begin with, aim your striker at the center of the arrangement and strike with moderate force. This helps spread the Carrom billiards evenly, making it easier to pocket them in future shots and gain a strategic edge.
How to Cover the Queen
To cover the queen in Carrom, pocket it and immediately pocket one of your Carrom billiards in the next shot. If you fail, the queen returns to the center, giving your opponent a chance. Therefore, carefully plan your shot with the striker and aim to pocket an easy Carrom billiard to secure the queen and gain an advantage.
How to Score in Carrom
Scoring in Carrom is straightforward. All you have to do is pocket each Carrom billiard for one point. The queen adds three points if you cover it by pocketing one of your Carrom billiards immediately after. The game ends when all Carrom billiards are pocketed. The player with the highest score wins.

- Striking Rules
For each strike, position the striker within the baseline or on the end circles, ensuring it touches both lines if within the baseline. Avoid placing it partially in both areas. Flick the striker with one finger, crossing the front baseline without striking pieces behind it. Keep hands behind foul lines.
- Basic Rules
On the first turn, the player gets three attempts to break the central group of counters. It’s fine if the striker hits no pieces or hits any color. Pocketing the Queen or pieces allows another turn; otherwise, the turn ends.
- Queen Pocketing Rules
A player can only pocket and cover the Queen after pocketing at least one of their own pieces. If the Queen is pocketed first, it’s returned to the center if not covered. Covering the Queen in the same turn as a piece counts, provided one piece was pocketed first. If the Queen is pocketed without being covered, the opponent returns it near the center.
- Fouls
Fouls include pocketing the striker, leaving pieces on the board, or pocketing an opponent’s piece. If the Queen is pocketed with a foul, it and the penalty piece are returned to the center. If the final opponent’s piece is pocketed, that and the penalty piece are returned. If the Queen isn’t covered before the last piece is pocketed, both are returned. If a piece cannot be returned immediately, the penalty is owed until a piece becomes available.
- Scoring Rules
At the game’s end, the winner earns a point for each opponent’s remaining piece and a bonus of 5 points if the Queen is covered. The maximum score per game is 14 points. For matches with 29 points, no bonus is given if the winner has 24 or more points.
- Rules for Doubles
Carrom is just as thrilling with four players in a doubles format. Partners sit across from each other, taking turns in a clockwise sequence. The game remains the same as singles but with a twist: pieces behind the baseline can be managed by your partner, adding a strategic layer absent in singles play.
